With the growing popularity of electric bikes (e-bikes), we wanted to share a quick overview of Pennsylvania’s rules so you can ride confidently and stay protected.
In Pennsylvania, e-bikes are defined as bicycles equipped with electric motors under 750 watts and operable pedals. They are generally treated the same as traditional bicycles, which means:
- You must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike
- Helmets are required for riders under 12
- E-bikes must follow the same traffic laws as bicycles
They are allowed on most roads and bike paths, unless specifically restricted
There are also three common classes of e-bikes:
- Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
- Class 2: Throttle-powered, up to 20 mph
- Class 3: Pedal-assist, up to 28 mph (may have more restrictions depending on where you ride)
From an insurance perspective, e-bikes fall into a bit of a gray area. Depending on the value of your bike and how you use it, your homeowners or renters’ policy may offer limited coverage—but it may not fully protect you in the event of theft, damage, or liability.
At Strickler Agency, we’re here to help you understand where you may have gaps and what options are available to make sure you’re properly covered.
If you’ve recently purchased an e-bike—or are thinking about it—we’d be happy to review your coverage and answer any questions.
Stay safe and enjoy the ride this season!
