Since 1979, the course has helped over 14 million drivers learn proven safety strategies and tips for adapting their driving to compensate for physical and cognitive changes that may come with aging. That’s because AARP trained volunteers relay valuable defensive driving skills and provide a refresher of the rules of the road using materials designed to aid mature drivers.
The classroom course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. AARP’s Smart Driver classes are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and also meet the requirements for a PA driver improvement course discount.
Both 8-hour and 4-hour classes are offered. First-time participants are required to take an 8-hour course; repeat participants have the option of taking the 4-hour class, provided they possess a 3-year certificate.
